Full House to Vote on HASC-Passed Resolution of Condemnation by Rep. Rigell Next Week

Press Release

Date: Sept. 5, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-CA) released the following updated fact sheet ahead of the scheduled vote by the full House of Representatives on H.Res 644 next week. In July, the House Armed Services Committee marked up and passed the resolution with bipartisan support.

Chairman McKeon said:"The upcoming House vote on Congressman Rigell's resolution is an important opportunity for Members to hold the President accountable for the lawless manner in which he transferred five dangerous Taliban terrorists earlier this year. As the recent GAO report made abundantly clear, the law is not a mere list of suggestions for the President to follow whenever he wishes. Laws are binding instruments by which the elected Representatives of the people can provide checks and balances on the President, particularly in matters of national security. I commend Congressman Rigell for his leadership on this issue and hope the full House will follow the lead of the House Armed Services Committee and pass H.Res 644 with strong bipartisan support."

HASC Member Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA) said: "The President's track record in engaging the legislative branch and indeed receiving Congressional authorization when mandated by law is not good. President Obama's exchange of five senior Taliban officials was unlawful and has put our national security at risk. America is not a monarchy and no president is king. Next week, the House of Representatives will remind the President of this."
